Agenda 2030: ITALY, ARE YOU READY?

In Italy, the implementation of policies to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda is monitored and promoted by ASVIS – Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development, which brings together most of the civil society associations committed to these issues, as well as by Istat.

To date, the latest Istat report (17/04/19) shows a rather backward situation with respect to the objectives to be achieved: the data highlighted in the infographic proposed by the Institute show the “painful keys” on which there is still much to do.

• SDG1: the population at risk of poverty or social exclusion is equal to 28.9%, although the figure is decreasing compared to the previous year. In 2017, moreover, it is estimated that 5 million and 58 thousand individuals are in absolute poverty.

• SDG4: Italy is still in the last places in Europe for the number of graduates, drop-out rate and skills: the drop-out rate has risen for the second consecutive year and stands, in 2018, at 14.5%.

• SDGs 15 and 13: Italy is in a virtuous position in the EU for the low consumption of natural resources, thanks also to the sharp decline recorded in the last fifteen years, but in 2017 2.2% of the population is exposed to the risk of landslides and 10.4% to flood risk; again, the temperature anomalies are equal to 1.30 ° C compared to normal climatological values.

• among the good news, we have one of the lowest percentages in Europe for infant mortality; moreover, in 2017 there are 58.7 expected years of healthy life at birth in our country.

The fact that we are still behind on the path of the 2030 agenda must push us, in reality, to a reflection: in addition to the concrete actions of governments – certainly necessary and essential – we need a change of mentality, almost a cultural revolution; in a nutshell: you too, we too, have the responsibility for change, just a few small daily actions, from consumption choices to eliminating waste.
